Mubi has announced a release date for The History of Sound – the historical drama starring Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor. Audiences will be able to catch this title on the big screen starting September 12. Mubi acquired the distribution rights for the title after this year’s edition of the Cannes Film Festival, where several companies were given the opportunity to bid for the rights to send the title to the big screen. The Deadline report states that The History of Sound could make its debut in North America thanks to this year’s edition of the Toronto International Film Festival.
The History of Sound follows the tender romance between Lionel (played by Paul Mescal) and David (portrayed by Josh O’Connor). The relationship between the two characters is thoroughly developed with plenty of honesty and trust, allowing the bond to remain strong. While that may be true when it comes to the couple’s early years, the older version of Lionel, played by Chris Cooper, sends the story in a different direction. Collider’s own Therese Lacson called the performances of the two main stars “absolutely heartbreaking”.
The History of Sound was directed by Oliver Hermanus, based on a screenplay written by Ben Shattuck. After working on titles such as Shirley Adams and Beauty, the filmmaker was more than ready to dive deep into this tragedy and the couple at the center of it. Hermanus likes to focus on stories that take their time with their exploration of their themes and main characters. The director hasn’t taken on many major projects yet, but that could change if the box office performance of The History of Sound turns out to be successful once the romance hits theaters.
The Talented Stars of ‘The History of Sound’
Two of the most acclaimed young stars working in the industry today were recruited for The History of Sound. Paul Mescal appeared in the movie after starring as Lucius Verus in Gladiator II, the legacy sequel that took Ridley Scott‘s action classic to another level. Last year also saw Josh O’Connor starring in Challengers, the steamy tennis drama directed by Luca Guadagnino. The performances by Mescal and O’Connor are the main hook of the film. Later this year, audiences will be given the chance to experience the highs and lows of an intimate relationship thanks to The History of Sound.
The History of Sound premieres in theaters on September 12. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
