The nomination round of voting takes place from June 12 to June 23, with the official Emmy nominations announced Tuesday, July 15. Afterwards, final voting commences on August 18 and ends the night of August 27. The 77th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards are set to take place on Sunday, September 14, and air live on CBS at 8:00 p.m. ET/ 5:00 p.m. PT.

The State of the Race

Oddly enough, the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series Emmy race is a bit dependent on how many voters watched “Shrinking” on Apple TV+. No one made the cut in this category for Season 1, including Harrison Ford, but many Emmy prognosticators have him, Michael Urie, Brett Goldstein, and even Ted McGinley all in the mix for an Emmy nomination. And voters could have caught on. The show’s For Your Consideration event was also a standout among the ones Television Academy members attended because it was one of the few that incorporated a set visit.

In terms of Emmy predictions one can count on though, it feels safe to go with some of the usual suspects. “The Bear” star Ebon Moss-Bachrach is on a two-year winning streak. “Abbott Elementary” star Tyler James Williams has been nominated for every season of the ABC sitcom so far. “Saturday Night Live” star Bowen Yang’s last nomination came somewhat of a surprise, given the amount of competition, but he is coming off both “Wicked” and “SNL50.” And “Hacks” star Paul W. Downs is coming off of his first nomination as an actor in the same year the HBO Max show won the Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series last fall.

Keeping momentum top of mind, Colman Domingo is coming off of being nominated for an Oscar two years in a row, and holds his own in the Netflix ensemble comedy “The Four Seasons” among major comedy stars like Tina Fey and Steve Carell. If that show becomes a surprise hit among voters, Will Forte and newcomer Marco Calvani stand a chance of being nominated as well.

Finally, Ike Barinholtz, who has surprisingly never been nominated for a Primetime Emmy despite being both a writer and performer, has arguably become a frontrunner for his performance in “The Studio.” The Apple TV+ series has an episode set at the Golden Globes that is a real showcase for him as Sal Saperstein, and he is also one of the creators of the new Netflix comedy “Running Point,” so he has been at all sorts of Emmys events where voters are quoting “The Studio” back to him.

Ike Barinholtz, “The Studio” (Apple TV+)
Colman Domingo, “The Four Seasons” (Netflix)
Paul W. Downs, “Hacks” (Max)

Last Year’s Winner: Ebon Moss-Bacharach, “The Bear”
Still Eligible: Yes.
Hot Streak: If “The Bear” star Ebon Moss-Bacharach were to win for his performance in Season 3, it would give him a streak that would put him in the rankings for most consecutive wins next to “Night Court” star John Larroquette and “The Andy Griffith Show” star Don Knotts.
Notable Ineligible Series: JB Smoove, “Curb Your Enthusiasm” (ended); Josh Lucas and Ricky Martin, “Palm Royale” (Season 2 is not eligible)
